The Major Oak is located a 10-15 minute walk through the woods from Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre near the village of Edwinstowe. According to local lore, its hollow trunk was used as a hideout by Robin Hood’s men, though if Robin was – as legend suggests – active in the 12th or 13th century, this tree could only have been a sapling then. So it must have been another, much older oak that hid the outlaw.

Thoresby Park has been owned by the Pierrepont family since 1600.  The family takes a full and active part in the management of the many enterprises, which keep Thoresby well maintained, enabling it to survive for the next generation.

The park was laid out in the 17th century in a formal, geometric, Jacobean style.  This was subsequently softened and rounded on the advice of Capability Brown, then Humphrey Repton and Nesbit, all of whom we must thank for most of the mature landscape that we now enjoy.

The Cathedral and Parish Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary is popularly known, as it has been for centuries, as ‘Southwell Minster’. Although Christian worship has taken place on this site for over 1000 years, the present Romanesque building celebrated its commencement, 900 years ago, in 2008.

Newark Castle

Newark was established as a town by King Edward the Elder during the early 10th century. Its strategic
location at the intersection of the Great North Road, the Fosse Way and the River Trent made Newark an important vantage point for fending off Danish raids. The Saxon fortified manor was replaced after 1073 by a motte and bailey earthwork Castle built by Bishop Robert Bloet. Following Bishop Robert’s death in 1123, Alexander the Magnificent, the new Bishop of Lincoln, took charge and between 1123 and 1133 rebuilt the Castle as a prominent stone structure of ornate construction.
